How to stay focused as a freelancer

If you like living life by your own rules, you should consider freelancing. You can wake up when you want, take a day off whenever, and turn up to work in your PJs. Of course, there are downsides too. You’re responsible for everything, work isn’t guaranteed, and you will be surrounded by distractions. Set a routine and stick to it

One of the golden rules of freelancing is setting a routine and sticking to it. Sure, you might like the idea of waking up at noon, going for a stroll, then settling down to some work. But, in reality, it’s going to make you even more stressed out. Most freelancers find that it’s best to stick to a normal work schedule (like nine to five) because then you’re working when everyone else is. However, you can find what works for you. Whatever schedule you choose, just make sure you hold yourself to account.

Take regular breaks

When you’re working for yourself, it can be easy to work for five hours without a break. The problem is, this method of working isn’t sustainable in the long run. If you want to keep your mind focused, you should take regular breaks. Some people swear by the five minutes every hour. Others prefer a break every two hours. Again, you will have to find what works best for you. 

Create a to-do list

Managing multiple projects at once is common in most jobs. But when you’re a freelancer, you have to manage projects, invoicing, client acquisition, and more. You are responsible for every part of your business, so it can be easy to lose track. You should keep an updated to-do list, so you can work on one thing at a time. Manage distractions

Managing distractions is part of any job. But when you’re freelancing, you will have even more to contend with. You can sit and play on for half an hour, but get your work done first. And you can talk to your housemates about the game at the weekend, just not for too long.

Eat well

If you’re serious about improving your focus as a freelancer, you might need to look at your diet. The food you consume has a direct effect on your concentration levels. Overeat, and you will feel tired and sluggish. Undereat, and you will have distracting hunger pains throughout the day. The best diet for concentration is one with lots of energy-rich foods (like eggs, nuts, fatty fish, vegetables, and fruit). Also, don’t consume too much caffeine in the morning because it will lead to tiredness later in the day.
